See music, hear, dance

This phrase by George Balanchine and the inherent relationship between music and dance, particularly evident in traditional cultures, are the starting points of our creative work. The traditional cultures of Indonesia and Greece inspire this performance. Dance, voice, song, and music coexist in a collective art piece based on guided improvisation.

Ronald Rand's LET IT BE ART!

Cast:  Ronald Rand............Harold Clurman

Setting:  Harold Clurman's apartment, the Osborne Hotel, New York City

Time:  June, 1980, a little before five o'clock in the afternoon.

The play is staged by the playwright.

Ronald Rand’s “LET IT BE ART!”

The unforgettable journey of Harold Clurman’s humor, passion and living life to the fullest brought to life by internationally-acclaimed performing artist, Ronald Rand.

The play begins in Harold Clurman’s apartment in New York City on a spring afternoon in 1980.  Surprised to find three of his students in his apartment, he soon begins a lively conversation, quickly taking them (and us) on an impassioned, joy-filled journey of his life and passionate beliefs about life, theater and humanity.

We follow Clurman studying in Paris at the Sorbonne University, his humble beginnings in New York City at the Provincetown Playhouse with Eugene O’Neill, his friendship with Lee Strasberg, and their decision with Cheryl Crawford to create the Group Theatre, becoming America’s greatest acting company during The Great Depression.  We witness Clurman’s fiery talk to young actors spurring them to join the Group Theatre – that by transforming themselves they can transform the theater through art.

Harold Clurman takes us with him and Stella Adler to Paris where Adler meets Constantin Stanislavsky.  We experience the first performance of Clifford Odets’ Waiting for Lefty in New York City, find ourselves with Clurman rehearsing with Marlon Brando, and even go to the theater with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.  Harold Clurman’s passion galvanizes us to ‘live life to the fullest’ –  with humor, compassion, and consciousness.
