Description
As our knowledge about the significance of the first years in a human being’ s life is growing, the necessity of theatre for early years (TEY) becomes more and more imperative. This opinion paper is trying to describe the Greek TEY case and the actions Artika is proposing in order to promote and spread awareness about the key role it can play in children’s psychological, sociological, physical and emotional development, and as a powerful tool to transform the educational process.
CV
Katerina Alexaki
is a theatre director, a performer and an educator. Her diverse credits includes ancient tragedy, contemporary plays, musicals, performances, stand up comedy and theatre for very young children on stages in New York, Greece and festivals abroad. She loves to teach theatre to children 5-18 years old as well as adults, in non-formal educational institutions. As a vocalist, she recorded three cds with the group Iris and made appearances in NY and Athens. She is the co-founder of Artika Theater Company and educational coordinator of EGTNY. She studied theater direction and acting in Greece and she has an MA in Applied Theater and a BA in Theater from CUNY. She is a drama therapy graduate student at Aeon Drama therapy Center. She is a proud mother of twin girls.
Marilena Triantafyllidou
is a founding member and artistic director of Artika Theatre Company. She started her theatre career as an actress in 2001 and turned to directing in 2013. She is also a singer and a singing teacher. From 2018 to 2023 she was Artika’s project manager in the large-scale European project “Mapping”, while recently she translated into Greek the research book "Mapping. The research". Since 2020 she has been actively involved in the development and promotion of TYA in Greece. She speaks English, French, she is a graduate of DEREE College and mother of a wonderful boy.
