CfP for the 6th International ‘Nonnus of Panopolis in Context’ Conference
‘Nonnus in Context’, Fifteen Years on: Current Trends and New Perspectives
23–25 September 2026, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece
The international conference series entitled ‘Nonnus of Panopolis in Context’ (NiC) was initiated in 2011 by Konstantinos Spanoudakis at the University of Crete. Since then, interest in Nonnus has continued to flourish and colleagues at the Universities of Vienna (Herbert Bannert and Nicole Kröll: 2013), Warsaw (Filip Doroszewski and Katarzyna Jażdżewska: 2015), Ghent (Berenice Verhelst: 2018), and Madrid (David Hernández de la Fuente and Laura Miguélez Cavero: 2023) have been organising subsequent NiC conferences to bring together students and scholars interested in the poetry of Nonnus of Panopolis and its contexts.
Fifteen years after the first NiC conference, we are delighted to invite 20-minute papers from established scholars and younger researchers alike for ‘Nonnus of Panopolis in Context VI’, which will take place in Athens, Greece, in 23–25 September 2026. Given that research on Nonnus, his poetry and contexts has been moving in a swift pace and towards innovative directions, the aim of the sixth conference in this series is to explore current trends and new perspectives. We welcome proposals that will open discussion for further research on any aspect of Nonnus’ poetry and its reception. We are particularly interested in hosting papers that will highlight the relationship between Nonnus’ works both with the earlier literary tradition and with various contexts (e.g. literary, visual, philosophical, theological, educational, cultural) within the framework of Late Antiquity.
Please send the title and abstract (up to 300 words) of your paper, together with your name and institutional affiliation, to kcarvounis@phil.uoa.gr and spapaioan@phil.uoa.gr by January 15th, 2026.
